THIS IS YOUR FRIEND ALFRED N!

So, I still don’t have any deep topic to talk about, but when I find one that hasn’t been talked about yet, i shall blog about it. FO SHO! Instead I shall talk about my day yesterday. It was pretty awesome. So yesterday was UCC MAY DAY and I was the MC for most of the day. Started up at 9 getting the whole PA system set up. BTW those circle tables from the student centre are a lot heavier than they look >.<. ANYWAYS, after we got the stuff set up I started to think of a good opening catch phrase. Then a LED fluorescent light bulb (just for you tree huggers out there) lit up in my brain. I came up with “THIS IS YOUR FRIEND ALFRED N!” and always ended off my comments with “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE” as i had my gangsta hat on that day. I do not think my “yeee” went well with the fans tho, as well as the varsity rugby team. Just pray that i don’t get beat up tmmr >.<.

Anyways this leads me to another point. Only like 40 people showed up for the varsity rugby game, and that includes people from Trinity College. Even less for varsity lax. Now its understandable that not a lot of fans show up for games that are away from school, but these were home games, also advertised home games. We had posters up and we probably spent a solid week of filming and editing the MAY DAY video. What ever happened to school pride? Even some people on the board didn’t seem to care. We were supposed to take turns mcing and playing music the whole day, that way i would of been able to watch the varsity badminton game, but no one showed up, so it was pretty much just me for most of the day and Brendan who stayed there all day. One of the stewards was supposed to bring chips and pop to sell since ARAMARK wouldn’t let us have a BBQ, but then he forgot about it. Somthing as important as refreshments for fans and he forgot it! Even though this May Day had a much better turn out than last year, it was still pathetic. The facebook event said we were supposed to get about 280 ppl who were attending with another 113 who were sent on maybe. Instead we get like 30 ppl come up and say where’s the food? What ever happened to school pride. At least we know A-Day would be better than this. But still, over the years i’ve been noticing the attendance at A-Day has been going down. One of the guys I talked to, and you all know him, AND HE KNOWS WHO HE IS, said to give him a reason to go to A-Day. Supporting your school isn’t enough? I for one am proud to go to UCC, and always has been. UCC is probably the best thing that has ever happened to me, even if i get crappy marks, I know I’m still smarter than the average bear. UCC is what taught me how to be determined, and how to stick through the thick and thin. It was a UCC old boy who taught me how to be the best candiate for an interview. I look at all the successful old boys and what they are doing for the world and economy and i can’t help but feel a sense of pride. Why is it that people don’t care about their school anymore? Not just at UCC but everywhere. Something as important as boarding being taken away just for the creation of a middle school and what we get is just a rise out of assembly. Yet out of those 800 or so students, probably only 20 maybe even less than that, actually goes on to e-mail the admin, the board of governors, or even that task force to complain and give out their view. I listened to the task force meetings, and i noticed one thing. All of the past alumni who complain have graduated over 10 maybe 15 years ago. The only people i heard who have graduated recently and are part of the fight is Vicar, who is pretty much the leader of the fight on Fbook, and Cianflowne, who’s still fighting strong. Bené doesn’t even talk to the students about the boarding crisis, and hes the only current student representative to the boarding task force for us. From what I’ve seen, he doesn’t do jack shit. But what amazes me is the fact that people can make fun of it. The amount of day boys who don’t care, who won’t even give there name and e-mail just to get a petition signed to keep an important tradition at our school to keep going. School pride has been completely lost among these people and I do not understand why. Don’t tell me that UCC makes us work hard and because of that we should hate it. Other private schools work soo much harder than us. Its just because we have the IB which makes us do an extra 3 major projects (EE, World lit, group 4) which weren’t as bad as we thought it would be, and the portfolios for math, science, and econ which is pretty much all the projects we have to do for those courses. But that doesn’t mean we work harder. We basically don’t have to do jack shit to get a 90 average. All we need is to get a 6 in every course and boom, 90 average. 6s are not that hard to get, even though i only have one of them. So let me explain to you what a 6 is. A 6 is a minimum mark of 83, or by the end of the year an 80, however because it is the “IB” we get an automatic extra 10% added so in turns into a 93 for the Ontario diploma. The actual work we do in the IB is probably the same as the public schools except for the higher level stuff which go at a much faster pace, but even still I would think its probably just 10% harder than the AP courses, but we get the extra 10% at the end of the year and most of the higher level courses are banded so its still easier to get a good mark, needing only a 70 to get a 6 instead of the usual 83.  So don’t give me that crap because our school makes us work hard. Don’t take me wrong, I love the school, and especially the IB. I feel after the EE that i can write anything, and the extra stuff we learn from the IB makes me feel so much more prepared for university. How is it that people can not just take off a few hours from their weekend to go support their school? I’ll admit, that i never went to May Day before, but I almost always went to A-Day except for last year and grade 9 ever since the prep.  Why is it that people don’t care anymore.

But yes now that that little schpeal is over, back to the story of my day.

After i finished MCing we played brawl for 5 and a half hours. YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. gg.

That…was a really long tangent right there ‘>>
Yeah school spirit! Booo IB! -.-’ (only saying this because I’m doing horrible at school and I don’t get an added bonus)

Anyway…our school is so spirited that it scares me. Like House Shout? What’s up with that? A bunch of girls screaming on a soccer field. Now if only I could get them all to do Hare Hare Yukai like T T,

Lol. Im so full of school spirit. Theres no1 else thats more hardcore about the school.

Dude, banding is amazing, HL Math: 80%+ = 7 = 98%. LOL. Sick, 18% increase. Although people still get 4s and 5s lmfao.

haha i’m in your post! XD

and hilary, i still don’t know what my favourite song is…feel free to tell me some time.

i think it goes more along the lines of “i have better things to be doing than to go to mayday” – there’s no incentive to be there, and i’m not sure a lot of people think of going to school, a place they go to five days a week, to watch students play sports as the ideal morning. a lot of people would probably rather stay at home, sleep in, do other stuff than come in. i mean, would you have gone if you weren’t a steward? XP

and yeah…nobody showed up from the board?…haaccckkk hahaha

but yeah…gotta give the masses an incentive to be there. you have to make them WANT to go. just having sports events probably isn’t enough for the non-hardcore. and sitting there and watching a game isn’t all that fun either, when you could stay at home, watch tv and watch some replay of an nba playoffs game or something. and yeah. school spirit is dead. because for some people, going to ucc isn’t good enough.

and people might not want to go because of the bad rep that ucc has outside of ucc. the stereotypical ucc guy is the snobbish, rich brat, and nobody likes that. i really don’t know what the students want though. i just get the feeling that there’s not much to do at these kinds of events. like you could put in house events, but not enough people care about the house to show up. cheerleaders might work? lmao but admin completely shot that down last year, so they’re def not gonna approve of it this year. but if the admin really wants to get people to come, they should change some of their policies. and they should take a look down at the schools in the US. they have lots more school spirit than we do.

and facebook usually isn’t a good indication XD it’s not reliable :P we like to pretend we care..but when push comes to shove, people just fade away. it’s like a culture. it’s something along the lines of a “make yourself look good in front of other people without actually committing to things” mentality.

heyy it’s not easy to get a 7 >.< lol

    MC NAT XDDD YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

psh i said it was ez to get a 6 and thats good enough for most ppl >.< who wouldn’t be happy with a 93 average? We couldn’t incorporate house events because it was too late to tell everyone, and we couldnt’ have a BBQ because aramark wouldn’t allow it. everything else was too late to decide. But yes i still would have gone. Being part of the process to make May Day a rival to A-Day makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. NEXT TIME GO! I’M STILL GOING TO GO EVEN IF ITS EXAM TIME!

    lol aramark gged ucc. XD
